Abernethy became an incorporated village on July 26, 1904. The community marked its hundredth anniversary in the summer of 2004 with a centennial celebration, held alongside the annual agricultural fair.
The village's past is still visible in its historic sites. Christ Anglican Church was built near Abernethy in 1886 and moved into the village in 1904. The Abernethy and District Memorial Hall went up in 1921 to honour soldiers returning from the First World War, paid for with donations from the community and designed by Storey and Van Egmond of Regina. Both are Municipal Heritage Properties.
Abernethy is also home to the Motherwell Homestead, a National Historic Site. It was the original homestead of W.R. Motherwell, Saskatchewan's first minister of agriculture.
Today Abernethy is primarily an agricultural community. Abernethy School closed in 1994, and children are now bussed to schools in Lemberg, Neudorf and Balcarres.
